Mahek was born as Raspreet Kaur Chahal on 1 February 1979 in Oslo, Norway. Her family members and friends call her by different names like Preeti and Mahek. She took interest in dancing since childhood and did Item numbers in a number of songs like Sajna Ve Sajna of Hindi film Chameli (2004), Talwar Re of Hindi film Chhodon Naa Yaar (2007), Agre Ka Ghagra of Hindi film Jai Veeru (2009), Mu Mu Mudhante of Telugu film Kedi (2010), Chamki Mast Jawaani of Hindi film Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), Na Champa Na Chameli of Bengali film Bikram Singha (2012), Ok Report of Punjabi film Jatt Airways (2013), Ka Thalkattu of Kannada film Mr. Airavata (2015), etc. She worked in different languages like Telugu, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, and Norwegian. Earlier, she had an affair with her childhood friend cum computer engineer Danish Khan. He proposed her on the set of Bigg Boss Season 5 grand finale and she accepted his proposal. But, after 2 years, they ended up their relationship.

Career
She did her schooling at Norwegian-medium school in Oslo, Norway. After completing studies, she went to India to make her career in acting. She got her first break as an actress in 2002 in the Telugu film Neetho, in which she played the lead role of Shalini. Unfortunately, the film was failed at the box-office. Before her appearance in that feature film, she did several short films like Jindey (2000), Dil Te Maar Gayi (2001), Chakde Bolly (2001), and O Vekho (2002).
She made her Bollywood debut in 2003 with the comedy film Nayee Padosan as Pooja Iyengar. She also works as a model and walked the ramp for numerous fashion designers.
In 2011, she took part in the reality TV show Bigg Boss Season 5 and became the first runner-up. In the same year, she participated in the Norwegian reality show Fristet. She also tried her luck in the field of comedy and participated in the comedy reality show Kahani Comedy Circus Ki in 2011.
