Thackeray Marathi trailer has appeal but lacks the punch of the Hindi one: Watch

Generally, different language versions of a film’s trailer have the same content. But the Marathi version of the trailer of Thackeray, which was released today, is almost entirely different from the Hindi version, which was also released today. The Marathi trailer seems to have been cut keeping in mind Thackeray’s following in Maharashtra.

The Hindi version gave a lot of importance to Thackeray’s image as a caring leader of the masses. The Marathi version, however, unabashedly shows his aggressive tactics while dealing with so-called ‘outsiders’. The derogatory slogan, ‘Uthao lungi, bajao pungi’, which was used against South Indian migrants in Bombay back in the 1960s, is also heard.

Similarly, Thackeray’s aggressive tactics while trying to secure lower-rung jobs for the local population, the infamous incident of party members digging up the pitch at the Ferozeshah Kotla in Delhi before an India-Pakistan match, and the Shiv Sena’s role in the 1992 riots also get more footage here.

But despite such hard-hitting and controversial content, the trailer lacks punch, mostly because of the decision to get veteran actor Sachin Khedekar to dub for Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Khedekar’s voice and manner matches neither Siddiqui nor Thackeray.

Produced by Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Thackeray is all set to be released on 25 January 2019.
