Varun Dhawan on Coolie No.1 remake

When actor Varun Dhawan recently revealed that he will feature in the remake of his father David Dhawan’s Coolie No.1 (1995), many questions were raised on social media about the need for the remake. During an interaction for his upcoming film Kalank (2019), the actor hinted that he was not surprised by the reactions.

“There will be hopes and expectations. There will be people who will say, we won’t be able to do it and why are they making it. But at the end of the day when the film releases, the reason will be out,” he said.

The remake will also be directed by David himself. The father-son duo had worked together in Judwaa 2 (2017). The film was a remake of the Salman Khan-starrer, Judwaa (1997).

Varun said that he was eager to do the remake of Coolie No.1 because he finds the original film thoroughly entertaining. “I was so entertained. I had such a good time watching it. It’s a family film. It’s actually one of the funniest and most entertaining films I have seen in my life. It has an amazing screenplay. It’s done by some brilliant actors then,” added the actor.

Coolie No.1 featured Govinda, Karisma Kapoor, Kader Khan, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Harish. The film was about a coolie (Govinda) impersonating a wealthy industrialist to marry the daughter (Kapoor) of a rich man (Kader). The entire plan is hatched by the matchmaker Shaadiram Gharjode (Amrapurkar) to avenge the humiliation by Kader’s character.

Varun clarified that they will not remake the film as it is and that will be a challenge for his father. “We are adapting it. It’s not a remake. I just want to bring that kind of fun back. And that’s why I think my father is also ready to do it. He has changed a lot of things to it. He has challenged himself also a lot,” he said.
