Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra strike an unlikely bond

After the Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur-starrer The Lunchbox (2013), filmmaker Ritesh Batra once again writes and directs an unlikely love story set in Mumbai.

Mumbai has been used as the backdrop in countless films (most recently this year’s Gully Boy), but director Batra, as seen in his earlier film too, loves to explore the multiple worlds that live within the city, through interesting characters.

Batra’s protagonists in Photograph come from very different worlds, despite being from the same city. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the role of a street photographer at Gateway of India and Sanya Malhotra is a shy and nerdy girl studying to become a chartered accountant.

Siddiqui convinces the shy Malhotra to pose as his fiancée during a family visit as his grandmother pressures him to get married. Despite the obvious cultural differences, the two form an interesting connection.

The intimate camera angles and leisurely pace of the trailer indicate that Batra hasn’t altered his inherent story-telling style that he used in his debut film, The Lunchbox.

The film also stars Sachin Khedekar, Vijay Raaz, Jim Sarbh and Farrukh Jaffar, who made a mark in 2010’s Peepli Live.

Produced by Amazon Studios, Photograph premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will be released in theatres on 15 March.
