Fatima Sana Shaikh on Thugs Of Hindostan failure

Fortunes can change in a jiffy in the film industry. One day you can be on the top of the world, and another day you could be staring at defeat. Actress Fatima Sana Shaikh enjoyed gigantic success with Dangal (2016), but it’s a different story with her subsequent film Thugs Of Hindostan (2018) that failed to live up to the hype.

“It (Thugs Of Hindostan) hasn’t done well. It is very heart-breaking. It is very sad because we all tried to make a good film but unfortunately, it didn’t do well. People didn’t like it. So, I am feeling very bad for it,” Shaikh told reporters at the launch of Netflix show, Selection Day. She will be seen next in the web-series.

Shaikh had played the character of Zafira in Thugs Of Hindostan. She teamed up again with superstar Aamir Khan, and for the first time with Amitabh Bachchan for the film.

After setting an opening day record (Rs50 crore nett), the action adventure drama fizzled out, managing Rs138.34 crore nett at the domestic box office. In normal circumstances, such a figure is not bad, but when the film in question has been made at an estimated cost of Rs300 crore, the numbers are quite underwhelming.

Comment: The days of thugging audiences are past

Khan had earlier apologized to his fans and the audience, taking the responsibility for the film’s failure.

Speaking at the finale of the first edition of Cinestaan India’s Storytellers Contest, Khan had said, “I take full responsibility for Thugs not working with the audience. I think we went wrong. But I would like to take full responsibility for that. We certainly tried our best. We didn’t leave any stone unturned in our efforts. But somewhere we went wrong.”
