Andhadhun, Tumbbad, Raazi lead News18 Reel Movie Awards 2019 nominations

Smaller budget films that won audiences over last year have picked up most of the nominations at this year News18 Reel Movie Awards 2019. Meghna Gulzar’s Raazi, starring Alia Bhatt as a spy, leads the pack with 14 nominations, while Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun with Ayushmann Khurrana as a blind piano player picked up 10 nominations. Rahi Anil Barve’s Tumbbad receiving eight nominations, including best film, was a pleasant and welcome surprise.

The family comedy Badhaai Ho is also nominated in eight categories, including best actor for Gajraj Rao and best actor (female) for actress Neena Gupta. Other smaller films that received notice were Anurag Kashyap’s Mukkabaaz, Nandita Das’s Manto, Dipesh Jain’s Gali Guleiyan and Anubhav Sinha’s Mulk.

Gupta who received her first nomination at the Reel Movie Awards said of the honour, “Modern cinema is slowly coming closer and taking a more realistic and varied form. Variety of subjects have been picked up by people and they have been successful so that’s a very important thing. Earlier, people did use to make films on different subjects but those films would never work commercially, so not many people continued making them. I think now is the best time in cinema, as it the story and the audience is ruling now.”

“Badhaai Ho is a very special film for me. It is one of the best that I have got so far, which had a good role for me and was loved by the people. It became a movie that was watched by a lot of people and loved as well. I think, we need more such awards that promote the goodwill of brilliant and unique storylines,” she continued.

Badhaai Ho’s director Amit Ravindernath Sharma added, “I believe that the Indian film industry was always predominated by content. Lately, filmmakers sidelined the fact and tried to gain mileage for their films, riding on the names of big stars that featured in them. It was deemed to be short lived. But, the times are changing and the tables are turning. The future looks bright for filmmakers. It is an honour for me to be nominated for the Reel Movie Awards and I’d like to thank News18 for considering my work on par with directors like Meghna Gulzar and Sriram Raghavan.”

The 2nd edition of News18 Reel Movie Awards, hosted by film critic Rajeev Masand, will be held on 26 March 2019.
