Biopic on India’s first female doctor to hit screens on 15 February

Marathi cinema is on a biopic spree currently. After Ani… Dr Kashinath Ghanekar, two more real life stories of writer Pu La Deshpande and politician Bal Thackeray are soon arriving in the form of Bhaai: Vyakti Aani Valli and Thackeray, respectively.

Now, another biopic is already in the offing. This one is on the life of Anandi Gopal Joshi, the first Indian woman to earn a degree in medicine. She is considered the first female doctor of India. Titled Anandi Gopal, the film is directed by Sameer Vidwans.

The filmmaker has shared the film’s motion poster on his social media channels. It starts with a bold line: “I refuse to accept the country that doesn’t accept me along with its religion.”

The line is enough to make you eager to watch the film. The background music also gives a feeling of a poignant period drama.

Anandi Gopal is produced by Zee Studios Marathi, Fresh Lime Films and Namah Pictures. The film stars Geetanjali Kulkarni and Yogesh Soman.

Born on 31 March 1865, Anandi Gopal Joshi was earlier named Yamuna. She got married at the age of nine to Gopal Joshi, who changed her name to Anandi. Gopal was a progressive thinker who advocated education for women. It was he who encouraged her to study medicine.

Anandi Gopal will be released on 15 February.
