Never left the Telugu industry for Hindi cinema, clarifies Ileana D’Cruz

Ravi Teja’s Telugu action entertainer Amar Akbar Anthony, slated for release this week, marks Ileana D’Cruz’s return to the industry after a gap of six years.

Having made her acting debut with the Telugu film Devadasu (2006) over a decade ago, D’Cruz shifted to Hindi cinema after she was signed on for Anurag Basu’s Barfi! (2012) with Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.

As she continued to sign on more Hindi films, reports began to circulate in Hyderabad that D’Cruz had bid adieu to Telugu filmdom.

However, while promoting Amar Akbar Anthony, she finally clarified that she had never quit Telugu for Hindi cinema and said she was surprised to read such reports.

In an interaction with a group of reporters in Hyderabad, she said: “People have misconceptions about my career in Telugu cinema. When I read reports that I have quit Telugu cinema, I was taken aback. After starting my acting career in the Telugu industry and working here for six years, why would I quit?”

The actress also explained why she wasn’t seen in Telugu films after 2012. “The reason is very simple,” she said. “I wasn’t getting exciting offers. Most of them were requests for ‘item’ numbers, which I wasn’t comfortable doing. After a point, I stopped paying heed to these reports and left everything to destiny.”

D’Cruz said she was really excited to return to the industry with Amar Akbar Anthony, which features her in a role with many layers.

This is her fourth film with Ravi Teja, who has a triple role in the film, and she described the experience of working with him as memorable.
