It is the season of biopics in southern cinema. After the phenomenal success of Mahanati (2018), a biopic on the legendary southern actress Savitri; more filmmakers are open to the idea of exploring an idea of a biopic. With over half a dozen biopics in the offing, including three different versions on the life of late actress and Tamil Nadu chief minister, J. Jayalalithaa; it would be really interesting to see how these projects get made amid tough opposition from members of AIADMK party.
While it has already been announced that Nithya Menen will get into shoes of Jayalalithaa in the version directed by Priyadarshini, actress Vidya Balan is most likely to be roped in for the titular role in the version of the biopic directed by Vijay. Apparently, Vijay is also likely to rope in Sai Pallavi to play Sasikala, a close confidante of Jayalalithaa.
VK Sasikala was a close confidante of the late Tamil Nadu chief minister, J Jayalalithaa. She took over the reins of the party after Jayalalithaa’s demise, with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general council unanimously electing her to be the interim general secretary in February 2017. Since then, she has been expelled from the party and arrested in a disproportionate assets case.
It is still not known if Sai Pallavi has officially signed on the dotted lines. It is worth mentioning that Vijay and Pallavi had worked together in Tamil horror drama Karu (2018), which released earlier this year.
Pallavi was last seen on screen in the Dhanush starrer, Maari 2 (2018).
The biopic by AL Vijay, will be produced by Vibri Media. The film is rumoured to be titled Amma, and will be released in multiple languages. Meanwhile, the Nithya Menen version of the Jayalalithaa biopic will be directed by debutante filmmaker Priyadarshini.
