If there is any common denominator for every member of Donald Trump‘s inner circle, then it is an often unpopular willingness to literally fight for their boss. Corey Lewandowski pretty much epitomizes everything Trump desires in an ally; tough, loyal and always up for a fight.
An experienced political operative, Corey Lewandowski had worked with a few Congressmen and Senators, helping them formulate and execute election strategies but had never done so with a Presidential candidate and surely never with a candidate as unorthodox as Trump.
The pair stuck a chemistry after he was invited to the 26th floor of Trump Tower in December 2014 on the recommendation of a Trump associate. He convinced Trump that he would work harder than anyone if given the opportunity. What he lacked in experience he made up for with a burning determination and a raging temper – a combination Trump seems to enjoy.
Corey Lewandowski’s Bio
Corey, who is of Polish descent was born and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts where he also attended a nonprofit high school- the Lowell Catholic High School. He holds a Political Science degree from the University of Massachusetts-Lowell and a master’s degree in political science from the American University in Washington DC.
In 1994, while still an undergraduate at the University of Massachusetts, Corey dabbled into politics for the first time when he ran for an open seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He lost to Democrat Thomas Golden Jr. who incidentally grew up on the same street as Corey.
After his defeat, while studying for his Master’s Degree in Washington, Corey made a list of every Congress member who had won their election with less than 55% of the votes cast. His offer was simple, “Let me run your next campaign and get your numbers up.” After various unfruitful attempts, he was hired by Ohio Republican Congressman, Bob Ney to run his campaign. Ney won and employed Corey as his administrative assistant, a role he held from December 1997 to February 2001.
After leaving Ney’s office, he was snapped up by the Republican National Committee to oversee legislative/political affairs in the North East.
Corey Lewandowski was back in his favorite spot – the campaign trail as Campaign Manager and Communications Director for the 2002 re-election campaign of New Hampshire senator, Robert Smith.
Between 2008 and 2015, Corey Lewandowski worked as East Coast Regional Director and later National Director of Voter Registration at Americans for Prosperity.
As it became clearer that Trump was going to run for president, Lewandowski was recruited as Campaign Manager and became part of President Trumps closest aides. The kitchen cabinet at the time included Hope Hicks, Dan Scavino, Michael Glassner and a few others.
As Trump’s campaign manager, Corey operated with the idea to always “Let Trump be Trump”, words that appeared on his office whiteboard. As Campaign manager, he was not far from controversy and was accused on more than one occasion of physically manhandling journalists and Trump dissenters at political rallies. In March 2016, Lewandowski was charged with one count of battery for physically manhandling a reporter, Michelle Fields.
